Mayor Sorace Appoints New Police Chief, John T. Bey

LANCASTER, Pa., June 21, 2021 — After a six-month search process Mayor Sorace announced the appointment of John T. Bey as the next Chief of the Lancaster Police Bureau. Sorace said “I am pleased to announce the appointment of John T. Bey as Chief of the Lancaster Police Bureau. After weighing community input, a national search, an extensive interview process, and witnessing his service as interim chief over the past seven months, I have determined Chief Bey is the candidate to meet this critical moment.” 

Chief Bey spent 25 years with the Pennsylvania State Police, retiring as Captain, Director of Training Division. During his career he also served as Director of Heritage Affairs and Recruitment and Special Services, as well as Emergency Planning Liaison Officer to the PA Emergency Management Association. He has overseen patrol and investigative divisions. Additionally, in November 2020 he retired as Chief Master Sergeant, Superintendent of Financial Services for the U.S. Air Force Reserves and PA Air National Guard managing a budget of more than $300 million.  

Chief Bey added, “It is my goal to work towards ensuring that our Police Bureau has the tools, training and personnel to continue being an agency that is committed to providing outstanding service and protection and engaging with our community to build trust. I am privileged to be a permanent part of the team.” 

The Lancaster City Bureau of Police is the largest Police Department in Lancaster County, with 139 sworn officers.  

Mayor Sorace and Chief Bey will be available for interviews today between 3:30 and 4 p.m. in person at Musser Park, 135 N. Lime St., prior to a 4 p.m. Neighborhood Meeting which kicks off Mayor’s Neighborhood Week. 

Chief Bey’s appointment is effective immediately.
