City of Lancaster Declares State of Emergency to Address Homeless Shelter Crisis

November 1, 2024 | Mayor's Office

The City of Lancaster has declared a state of emergency regarding housing and shelter for homeless individuals in Lancaster City. Although a new, permanent shelter is scheduled to open in December 2024, there is a critical shortage of shelter space and an immediate need for additional beds to serve the city’s homeless population. The City, in coordination with Tenfold, has secured an interim shelter space at 308 E. King St. to bridge the gap until the new shelter on East Clay Street opens. This declaration allows the City to work with Tenfold, waive certain regulations and expedite permits to ensure temporary shelter services can be provided promptly. If approved by City Council, this will remain in effect until the new shelter is operational or until January 31, 2025.
